About Project

The Bodnar Surname Y-DNA Project is established to assist in confirming Bodnar lineages. If you descend from a Bodnar line, participating in this DNA project could help your research considerably and/or provide some much needed proof and direction for further research.

Bodnar Name Meaning

Ukrainian: occupational name for a cooper, from bodnja ‘tub’.
Polish and Slovak (Bodnár): from Low German, a borrowing of either Böddener ‘cooper’ or Bodner ‘cottager’.
Hungarian (Bodnár): occupational name from the Slavic loanword bodnár ‘cooper’, of German origin.
Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press, Mar 2003

The tests are done on the Y-chromosome which is passed from father to son, and from him to his son, etc., thus participants must be male and must have the a variant of the Bodnar surname all the way down the male line. If you are a female and wish to have your Bodnar line participate in the Project, a male cousin, uncle, brother, etc., can provide the DNA for your line.

If you are interested in joining the Bodnar Y-DNA Project, please contact the Project Administrator (above) for additional information or follow the instructions below. We have obtained a special group discounted rate. Just a simple swab of the inside of the cheek is required. Results are available in about 60 days.
